The Art of Being With (vs. Processing): Part II

collage by Amanda Verdery Young, CanvaPro

Beloved,
to pluck the apple from the tree
yourself,
to hold her, smell her
in glowing Autumn light
to bite in
suck the juices
without first washing her

to gather the many
and bring them home
and slowly peel one after another
to draw out the core
save seeds
or give them to birds
along with skins, cores, bruised edges
to be with the slow rich molten scent
as they cook down
in the pot

to stir and be stirred
to add cinnamon
orange peel
to let them all be cooked
down and down again
in their own time
according to their own
romantic
science

to be burned once or twice
as you stir and stir again
to laugh
to cry
to remember
while everything is cooking
down
getting soft and softer
smaller
more concentrated
forever changed
no going back
to that tree
that field
that One Day

trusting the stove is still on
when you step away
to take a call
to play
to walk the neighborwood:
to be with the making of something new
by way of your senses
and the back burner alone
to let it all simmer
as it must
to know what's being made
and to not know
with gentle effort—

only to not let it burn
or cool too fast
your only task, really
more spice
if you like
and make a clean vessel:
boil the water
to banish
threat of spoilage
how simple it will be
once ready
to pour your riches
into simple boats
you've so diligently
purified

you cannot wait to meet this One
to your lips
to share the bounty
with all you meet
and to know that
you, too, will be fed
all the Winter long.
